Sen-Sei,
a native to Brooklyn ,N.Y., started his musical career at age
five. After 13 years of studying classical music, Sen-Sei had
mastered the finer elements of piano playing. A demonstration
of his musical talent was seen at Carnegie Hall in 1989. In the
following two years, Sen-Sei found himself in and out of bands
that ranged in funk, jazz, and top 40 of the time. Problem was,
he couldnt find the type of music that really moved him.
After relocating to San Francisco in 1991, Sen-Sei experienced
his first underground house party, dancing to the beats of DJs
Dutch, Carlos, and MoonPup. From that moment on, it was clear
that dance music was the true love for Sen-Sei.
Since moving to the Bay Area from Brooklyn,
Sen-Sei has strived to maintain the balance between live and pre-recorded
music. His simplistic Ying-Yang trademark is a contrast to the
vitality and charisma he exudes during his performance. Sen-Sei
uses a mixer, 2 synthesizers, and his 20 years of piano experience
to bring a truly live element to a set.
As a former party promoter, with such
titles as Gemini, Phat Frisco, and Higher State of Freedom under
his belt, Sen-Sei has been on the cutting edge of the House Music
movement for the last 7 years. Having the opportunity to perform
with DJs such as John Howard, and DJ Taj, among others, shaped
his style while maintaining versatility. His first wide
release 12" single recording was with Wicked Records debut,
"20 Minutes of Disco Glory" featuring DJ Garth and E.T.I.
DJs world wide still play the "Ye Olde Organ Grinder"
mix. Sen-Seis follow-up vinyl appearance was on OBORO Records
release of "Fourth of July", which captured him on DJ
Rob Dotens "Explosive Mix".
During a performance, Sen-Sei will blend
in additional keyboard accompaniment (i.e. melodic lines, effects,
samples, percussion, etc.) which are mostly improvised. He takes
House music to the next level, adding a variety of Jazz, Funk,
Acid, and Electric styles. At a time when music is being created
inside closed studios, live musicians are coming forth to be heard,
Sen-Sei is at the head of the pack.
Sen-Sei was recently voted "Most
Creative Artist" in the San Francisco Dedication Awards
of 1999.
