David
Coleman, born and raised in San Francisco, began his musical career
with an electric guitar towards the end of his high school years.
While majoring in Architectural Engineering at the University
of Colorado in Boulder, he studied conventional music theory.
In the early part of 1992, while still in Colorado, he was exposed
to a small underground rave scene. After a weekend visit home
he was enraptured by the new House Music Sound exploding from
clubs and warehouses city-wide.
By the fall of 1992, David began collecting
records and soon after had acquired his first Technics 1200. He
then moved to Sidney Australia and met up with DJ Phil Smart who
helped him get local gigs. After gaining the experience and exposure
needed, he returned to San Francisco and began a DJ collective
with counterparts Thomas Michael and Christopher Lawrence called
Spiral Jive. Together they threw a free monthly outdoor party
called "The Recession Session" featuring local guest
DJs.
In1994, David threw a party called "Kinetic",
which featured DJs Jeno, Corbin, DJ DAS and Coleman himself.
He then performed several live sets broadcasted on a local, progressive
house radio show. In 1995, David began teaching himself the art
of sound engineering while compiling the necessary music hardware
to create a respectable home music studio.
By fall of `96 Coleman had pressed his
first record and over the next few months, continued to cut acetates
and test pressings of his new material. It was 1997 when David
played at "BIGFLOOR" with DJs Dan, Tony, Donald
Glaude and Thomas Michael, debuting several new songs in the peak
of the night to a crowd that was hungry for a new voice and sound.
Over the years, Davids drive and
love for music were pushed to the next level. Combing sound engineering
and DJing gave Coleman an insight towards his mixing style. When
you watch him spin, you cant help but be entranced with
his technique of long, blended mixes. What really makes David
stand out is that he tells a story with the set he plays. To listen
to David Colemans set is to go on a journey through the
various stages and shades of House music. His hard-hitting bass
lines coupled with a feel of funk, jazz, acid and progressive
will definitely take you away!
